The name “decaf” can be misleading though. Not all caffeinated or decaffeinated beverages are created the same.
A caffeinated cup of drip coffee contains 70-140 mg of caffeine per 8 oz cup. The determinate of how much caffeine is in each cup depends on the varietal of coffee, roast, type (pour over, espresso, instant, decaf) and size of the cup.
A typical decaf cup of coffee can contain 0-7 mg and much more from commercial brands.
-Starbucks contains 15–30 mg of caffeine, depending on cup size
-Mc Donalds has an estimated 8 mg per cup
-Dunkin Donuts “decaf” contains around 53-128 mg in a cup which is equally as much in a caffeinated cup
Decaf coffee has generally had 97% of it’s caffeine removed by either water, organic solvents, or carbon dioxide. Once the caffeine has been extracted, the solvent is removed.
The environmentally friendly and chemical-free method is called The Swiss Water Decaf Process.Using water from the coast mountains of British Columbia to gently remove 99.9% of caffeine, it is the safest and 100% chemical free.
After green coffee beans have had caffeine removed, they are then roasted and ground. Containing almost identical nutritional value, the end product is almost identical minus caffeine.
